A lecture in English at the Japanese Association of University Women, Niigata Branch.
Our staff member, Dr. Ekachaeryanti Zain, delivered a lecture in English at the Japanese Association of University Women, Niigata Branch. She was an awardee of a JAUW scholarship during her doctoral study at Niigata University. She talked and discussed a new behavioral addiction, which was the internet game disorder that happened in children and adolescents. Her talk was part of her research on neuroimaging of internet gaming disorders conducted at the Department of Psychiatry of Niigata University. In addition, she added that trauma could lead individuals to seek solace or escape in various forms of addiction, including internet and gaming addiction, as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions and experiences. These compulsive behaviors often served as a temporary relief but could ultimately exacerbate feelings of isolation and distress, creating a cycle that was difficult to break. Participants who were fluent in English also asked questions. Everyone enjoyed the lecture, tea and sweets, and was smiling as we took photos of the JAUW members, making for a pleasant gathering.
